The Star of ESPN's Kiana's Flex Appeal Fit and Pretty Example of Success!
KIANA'S LIFE AND TIMES ON ESPN - PART 2
Why do you think that few people in your industry are able to host, produce, edit and casting their own shows?
Too many people wait for things to be handed to them. They may wait for ever. You have to make things happened and do it yourself, if you try and fail, at least you tried! Try again! To be able to do what I
do, you have to truly love all aspects of hosting, producing, editing, casting, etc. You really need to be able to wear all diff. hats and do a dozen things at once. Most people love only one side: for ex., the on camera part. I love being on camera, love creating, writing, editing and working with my crew to produce the final product. I feel that being on camera makes me a better director because I know what and where I can go on set; In contrast, I know how to direct the cast, because I know how it feels on camera. When I am on camera speaking, I am seeing in my mind what the camera sees and am already editing it, adding graphics, music, etc. in my mind. Scary, huh? I am totally aware of the lighting, crew, cameras, people watching, equipment, cast, weather, etc. and if we have enough grilled, chicken breasts on the craft services cart.
How, why, where and when did you learn to do all these things?
I learned on the job, I was thrown out there and asked a million questions, watched everything, took mental notes, watched how people behaved, the kind of reaction they got, spent alot of my lunch hours (when other cast members were on the beach) in the production truck learning how to "switch" (edit) a 3 camera shoot, how the audio works, etc. The crew is so friendly and knowledgeable, they taught me alot.
Tell us about your own line of sports equipment, your relationship with Hoist Fitness Systems, endorsement with MET-Rx and Bollinger Industries?
I have the Kiana Fitness Band which is a portable, resistance exercise band and video that people can do anywhere. We use it on Flex Appeal and it is great for rehab. www.kiana.com Band Kit $29.95.
Are you endorsing any other products and/or services?
I am developing my own line of Supplements; protein powder, bars, etc. I can't wait! Its time for me to have my own line instead of endorsing other lines.
You're obviously a strong advocate of lifting weights, so can you share its main benefits and the common stereotypes that doesn't apply.
Weight lifting is the best way to shape your body. It improves bone density. It improves posture, gives you a sexier body. Lean muscle burns more calories at rest than fat meaning you will lose weight even while sleeping. You will be younger longer, daily actives are easier. False: Women who lift heavy look masculine and will develop huge muscles-not true. Women don't have the genetics to do that, it's very diff. to add muscle.
Tell us about your health regiment -has it changed, evolved, improve and/or modified in these past few years?
I train less now, I am on a maintenance program now. I always give my 200% in the gym: don't socialize, lift heavy, keep moving, never stop. I force myself to take a day off, train 5-6 days per week, jog 3-4 days. I have a weekly 1 1/2 hour massage which is awesome. I am conscious about giving my body time to recuperate and rest after heavy training. I train each muscle/body part 1 time per week.
Do you know how many people are watching your show every week and from where?
75 million homes worldwide, US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, all over. Men and women alike, ages 18-49.
I understand that your show is #1 in Taiwan, what kind of letters do you receive from there?
I get alot of emails, very nice, complementary emails. they usually ask for my help to set up gyms and health clubs there.
Are there any other countries in Asia where it's among the top-rated shows? (i.e. Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, etc.)
I heard from kick boxing friend Japan that we are popular on STAR TV (Japan's ESPN)
What is the popularity of your show in your home state of Hawaii?
It's the bomb! We are really popular in Hawaii.
What do you say to critics that say that the sexiest TV network is ESPN2 - of which, your show is the most popular? Do you think that they are missing something from your show?
Visit her website at www.Kiana.Com.
At her site, discover
They were developed to meet the needs and requests of her many viewers.
For what ever reason people watch and talk about my show-it's great! A lot of people generalize or see swimsuits and think it's all about sex, but then they take the time to listen to the instruction and they learn something. I think the sexappeal gets people's attention and the content keeps their attention. The entertainment industry doesn't work the other way around. We get alot of positive feedback that viewers appreciate the swimsuits since they can see the muscles working as opposed to if we wore sweat suits.
What makes you different than the previous female ESPN examples such as Gilad, Denise Austin, Jennifer, Kimeko and the other previous females?
I believe that I connect with the viewers as their friend, role model and fun person. I am like their workout buddy, not a dictator or class instructor. Because I am in 75 million living rooms every morning on TV, people feel they know me, as if we're friends.
Did ESPN encourage you to incorporate other avenues (i.e. books, videos, tapes, etc.) to maximize your efforts or was this completely your idea(s)?
This was my own idea, I love marketing and creating new products!!!!!
